On September 7, 2005, I received a call from Liz Keller, founder of Glen Wild Animal Rescue and Top Dog Kennel in Rock Hill, NY, asking if I would consider spending a week in the Gulf Coast doing animal rescue and recovery. The HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) was in deperate need of Animal Control Officers, Dog Control Officers, Vet Techs, etc. I agreed to help and on September 9, 2005, we received our official deployment to Hattiesburg, MS. The next day, we scrambled to assemble crates, supplies, equipment, etc. My town's Deputy Clerk, Laurie Dutcsher and Supervisor's Assistant, Kathy Farrand assembled a donations table at the local Shoprite supermarket and within 4 hours, raised $650! We bought dog food, cat food, cleaning supplies, kitty litter and packed up my truck and trailer. Kaaterskill Animal League came to my home with two pick-up loads of donated supplies. Monday, Liz and I left with a truck and trailer packed with donations and equipment.
